The workshop titled "Earthquake Resilient City Manisa," held in collaboration between Manisa Celal Bayar University and Manisa Metropolitan Municipality, took place at the Prof. Ümit Doğay Arınç Cultural Center.
The workshop, attended by Manisa Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Cengiz Ergün, Manisa Celal Bayar University Rector Prof. Dr. Rana Kibar, Deputy Governor Mustafa Yıldız, protocol members, academicians, and invitees, focused on discussing what could be done to increase Manisa's resilience against earthquakes.
In her opening speech at the workshop, Rector Prof. Dr. Rana Kibar emphasized the importance of confronting the reality of earthquakes, mentioning that they had been involved in the region's efforts since the first day of the earthquake on February 6th, highlighting that Manisa is located on an active fault line and that preparations should be made for earthquakes. She stated, "The importance of this workshop is immense in facing the reality of earthquakes and preparing our city for a possible earthquake. The ideas and suggestions that emerge from the workshop will shape our roadmap for making Manisa a earthquake-resilient city."
Manisa Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Cengiz Ergün stated that earthquakes are an inevitable natural phenomenon and emphasized the need for collective efforts to prepare the city for earthquakes. Ergün said, "As the municipality, we are conducting various studies to increase the earthquake resistance of buildings in our city. This workshop is an important platform to increase awareness and produce solutions."
Mayor Ergün also mentioned that they had conducted free earthquake resistance tests for over 600,000 independent structures in Manisa in collaboration with Manisa Celal Bayar University. He expressed gratitude to the university's valuable academicians, especially the Department of Civil Engineering, for their important collaboration.
Following Mayor Cengiz Ergün's speech, Prof. Dr. Orhan Dede Polat from Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Engineering Department of Geophysics Engineering presented "The Importance of Geophysical and Seismological Research," and Prof. Dr. Ali Demir, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at Manisa Celal Bayar University Faculty of Engineering, presented a presentation on the city's building stock.
The workshop aimed to create awareness about Manisa's earthquake risk and the need to increase urban resilience against a possible earthquake, bringing together academicians and stakeholders of the city to develop solution proposals. Panel discussions and presentations were held on topics such as "Current Situation and Solution Proposals for Manisa's Earthquake Risk," "Organization of Emergency Management and Services," "Economic Impacts of Earthquakes: Evaluations Based on the Possible Manisa Earthquake," and "Potential Manisa Earthquake from an Engineering Perspective."
The implementation of the suggestions and solutions emerged from the workshop is expected to make Manisa a more earthquake-resistant city.
